“People may see me as a beautician or makeup artist but actually I’d rather be referred to as an image consultant. No doubt, a facial makeup has a lot to do with colours and art but what about your assemble? They are all part of your personality, aren’t they? So, you can’t really separate the two. This is why fashion and beauty always go together. And this is what I do best.”

In fact, Ivy’s interest in colours and designs saw her studying fashion design in her early years, which she carved a successful career out of. Then in 2004, she decided to learn about beauty too and became a certified makeup artist. After graduation, she wanted flexibility to experiment, so she decided to work on her own rather than to be attached to a salon or brand.

Her eye for colours and hues soon caught the attention of the industry and during this period, she was invited to participate in numerous fashion, beauty and hair shows as their image consultant. The fashion and beauty industry quickly affirmed her outstanding skills in makeup and her knowledge of fashion when she was chosen as the image consultant to Miss Singapore for the Miss Universe pageant in 2005.

Subsequently in 2008, just 4 years after entering the beauty domain, Ivy was chosen by the top, internationally reputed brand, Jane Iredale, as their Chief makeup trainer and educator.

Commenting on her new salon in Holland Village, which opened in February 2012, she says, “It was a natural step for me after so many years in the fashion and beauty industry. I wanted to work with a solid brand. The time was right because I had found an extremely good product which I wanted so badly to represent. Also, by this time, I already had three children and I wanted to do something that is less stressful. You know what these shows can be like! My husband encouraged me and this is how it all started.”

Of the brands of cosmetics she represents, she says,“The best cosmetic won’t be of much use if you do not have healthy skin, so mine is a holistic approach to beauty. This is how I select my products. I’d say that Jane Iredale is the “Rolls Royce” of cosmetic brands. This is not your regular “branded” cosmetics. This is cosmetics with skin care benefits. It nourishes. Chris Chua, steering Pilates Body Pilot to its 11th year in business

Christopher Chua was born into a sports and health-conscious family long before he owns Pilates Body Pilot – his current pilates’ outfit in Holland Village’s Chip Bee Gardens.

His father, who was a body-builder, often reminded him of what it means to be healthy. He said, “I was brought up being constantly reminded of how to keep my body healthy with the right diet and exercises. My dad had a great influence on what I am doing now.”

Christopher graduated with a Business Administration degree and spent the first 7 years after graduation working for a bank. As his interest in fitness and health grew, Christopher spent more and more time in the gym, where he was a regular member.  Seeing his passion for fitness, he was offered an opportunity to become an assistant trainer by the owner of the fast-expanding gym. Christopher immediately resigned from his bank job and took up the opportunity with great excitement. This was in 1999.

Christopher knew that in order to master this new profession he had to learn all he could about fitness and health. He said, “With the guidance of this established gym, I was initially certified as a trainer but I could see that many clients who came into the gym had other health issues to resolve. These clients did not come for sports conditioning or general workouts but they came seeking weight loss and rehabilitation programmes. I quickly realized that what we were offering did not meet these needs. So, I decided to skew my own learning beyond exercise regimes and include the nutritional and post-rehabilitative aspects. I also realized that people who were attempting to achieve certain health-related goals require motivation and a certain mental attitude, so I knew I had to come up with a holistic approach encompassing mental, physical and spiritual health. Of course, this also meant I was preparing for my own unique set of offerings in the market place.”

So, over the years which followed, Christopher enrolled in a series of internationally accredited and globally-recognized certification programmes and courses. He says, “You don’t just take a 3-day course on rehab work and proclaimed you can do rehab work. There must be examinations, internship hours, assisting teaching assignments and a senior trainer sign-off. This is serious matter because you can’t afford to injure someone, so you won’t get certified unless you have achieved 90% competency, which is equaled to 90% of the examination marks. With experience, you will be able to tell subtle signs from different body types and this can help you plan the best regimens for your clients.”

You will not fail to see his qualifications pinned to his studio wall – just to make sure that his clients know what he is talking about. He continues, “We partner with osteopaths who send their patients here for regular treatment but our clientele comes from everywhere across the island. Some come here because they have injured themselves exercising and require professional corrective work.”

Mette, distributor for the CHANGE brand in Asia

Mette Holte Jensen came to Singapore from Denmark with her husband 6 years ago and ended up fulfilling her dream of owning her own business – right here in Holland Village.

“My husband said I could find everything here in Singapore but when I arrived, I couldn’t find my favourite brand of undergarment. So, my entrepreneurial spirit kicked in and I became an agent for a very good product from Scandinavia. I was selling through fairs and various direct marketing channels. And 3 years’ ago, in 2008, I opened my shop, CHANGE undergarment in Holland Village.”, Mette, who has been marketing the CHANGE range of lingerie and swimwear a year after she arrived, recalled.

Mette spent the earlier part of her working life in the trading and shipping industry as well as in the timber-related industry, and had always dream of running her own business since a very young age. She is very happy to be able to provide a product and service, which she feels is essential for a market which is not catered for in Singapore.

Good range and good value

Mette’s store, called CHANGE undergarment, is the name of the largest and most popular undergarment brand in Scandinavia (Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Iceland and Finland). This lady was able to persuade the CHANGE undergarment manufacturer to award her distributorship not only for the Singapore market but also for the Asian region!

She proudly says of the product, “This is a proven brand, a very good product. It is durable, offers a good range of colours and sizes, and it fits well. We get new stocks every 4 to 6 weeks. It is also reasonably priced compared to what you get out there. A basic bra costs $60 to $70. Our most expensive ones do not go beyond $110. I am the sole distributor for this region and this is the only shop in Singapore, and in the region, where you can find the CHANGE undergarment brand.”

Swimsuits that are based on cup sizes provide a better fit

On how a good fit is connected to good health, Mette says, “Do you know that most brands of bra here are not sold on cup sizes but back sizes? This can give rise to back problems for heavier women. Also, swimsuits are sold based on small, medium and large sizes. This leaves comfort at the back door. Many women don’t realize that the wrong bra size can give rise to health problems in the long run. Local women are also getting bigger these days and they need to know this. It is the cup size that matters otherwise you won’t be able to get a comfortable fit.”

Mette, whose mission is to bring this message to all women, is not talking only about Westerners but Asians as well. “We have very large sizes such as K cup, which you can’t find elsewhere. And we also have small sizes such as 65B. Our aim is to give our customers a superior fit with a quality brand. So in my Holland V shop, we carry what this market needs.”

This friendly and sociable lady provides excellent customer service, “My customers are mostly regulars. They know they are getting value for money and good service from me. I fit them according to what they really need. If you come here with a measurement taken elsewhere, do not be surprised that it may not be an ideal fit. I will change that for you because I look at cup size and back size to give you an exact and comfortable fit. You don’t get this elsewhere.”

No wonder Mette is busy exchanging festive wishes with her satisfied clients, “You see, today they come in just to say hello and wish me Merry Christmas! That’s because I fit them like a queen. They feel good. They have changed to something better.”

Ashi Reflexology

Making sure your feet are in good hands 

Owner Lennard of Ashi Reflexology, having established a foothold in the Village

It was in the early 90’s and Lennard’s mother was plagued with persistent migraine. Like any concerned son, Lennard wanted a cure for his mother but drugs were out of the question. Having been brought up exposed to Eastern cures, his instinct told him he could probably find a solution in traditional Chinese healing method. Fortunately for Lennard, while he contemplated on this, he bumped into an old friend who happened to be in the reflexology business. So, naturally, Lennard asked his friend for advice.

His friend taught him a few reflexology and massaging techniques for the feet and assured him that it would be effective in relieving migraine pain, so he quickly headed home and applied his newly acquired skill to his mother’s feet. To his amazement, his mother’s headache vanished without a trace. Each time he applied the technique, his mother’s migraine disappeared. With a combination of regular treatments and herbs, his mother’s illness was subsequently cured.

Lennard says, “Of course, I was so happy to see my mother relieved of her pain. I was also dumbfounded that something so simple could have such an impact on health and well-being. I was so motivated by its efficacy I couldn’t stop thinking how others could benefit from it. So I began learning all about reflexology during the years which followed. I was then working for Singapore airlines as an aircraft technician but that was how I became interested in reflexology and massage.”

Comfortable, hygienic and relaxing.

As destiny would have it, Lennard met his friend again a decade later in 2003 in his Holland Village shop. Not surprisingly, he was still running his reflexology business. Seeing Lennard’s passion for reflexology, his friend invited him to become a partner of his business. Without hesitation, Lennard immediately left his job of 14 years as a certified aircraft technician and began to learn what it was like as a full-time masseur and therapist. Then a year later, in 2004, an unfortunate incident crippled his partner and Lennard took over the entire business in Holland Village. Lennard reorganized his business and began expanding his range of services (see SERVICES below).

In regard to maintain professionalism and integrity in the massage and reflexology trade, Lennard says, “I have 10 therapists – 5 masseurs and 5 masseuses. I am very selective in my choice. Every one of them has at least 10 years’ experience. They have all undergone government certification courses and are qualified

therapists in their own fields. For foot therapists, after they join us, they are additionally trained according to our house technique, which is based on a particular, traditional, Taiwanese method. There are other methods but this particular approach, which focuses on certain meridian points, appears to be a very effective foot massaging technique, so we adopt it. ”

Lennard continues, “We follow very strict rules in regard to attire and assigning therapist. When a female customer comes into the shop for massage, we will assign a female therapist unless she specifically makes a special request. For a full body massage, the client must be fully clothed during the massage. For sports massage, we assign a male therapist and we will let female customers know beforehand. We are very serious in what we do and our customers appreciate that.”

Lennard describes how he is able to attract and retain customers, “I don’t advertise. I believe that word-of-mouth is the best form of advertising for my kind of business. I have built up a solid customer base here out of our reputation for authentic services and reasonable prices. They come from the clubs – Swiss, American, Japanese, Tanglin and all over – all through word-of-mouth. I have expatriates as well as locals. Everyone is welcomed.”

A cosy ambience

Lennard explains the meaning of “Ashi”: “During the initial years, we used to have quite a fair bit of Japanese clients, so we adopted the “Ashi” name. But our service quality and price appeals to all, as we have discovered over the years. Some of my competition use the term ‘Ashi’ when they canvass for customers, implying that they have some similarity or connection with us but this is not true. They are not connected to us. ‘Ashi’ has nothing to do with technique. It is simply the Japanese term for ‘foot’.”

Concerning his passion for the business, Lennard says, “I love this business because it has saved my mother from her anxiety. It is special to me. I am personally here every day, so as to make sure my customers get what they come for.”

One artist’s quest to save our heritage

How does one recognise a true artist?

In the Tradition and the Individual Talent, the writer, T S Eliot says, “The progress of an artist is a continual self-sacrifice, a continual extinction of personality,” but in Diana’s case, she’s certainly kept her personality of colour throughout all her works and in her passion.

If we adopt ‘some’ of TS Eliot’s description of a committed artist’s disposition, then we have found a true artist here in our own village – one that locals and non-locals can be proud of.

Many of us in the village may not have heard of Diana Francis (partly because her gallery, Diana Francis Studio, is “hidden” in an upstairs loft along Merah Saga’s side – The Workloft@ChipBee) but for more than 10 years, this artist has been doing Singapore a massive favour by single-handedly striving to put on record Singapore’s vanishing heritage with a faithfulness like no other artists has captured before her – and doing this with a talent rarely seen.

The irony of it all is that this lady is not a child of Singapore but of England. Notwithstanding, recently, the National Heritage Board has recognized her work by becoming a key sponsor of her endeavor Diana Francis Designs – which is to record and interpret in her own way the vanishing landscape, flora, animals/insects and Singapore’s mix of cultural ethnicity, which give Singapore her heritage.

Showcasing her work at Sun Festival

In 2010, she was invited by the Singapore Sun Festival, to give her interpretations of the “seven artistic disciplines of visual art, music, film, literature, food, wine and wellness””, which were the event categories subsumed under the “Art of Living Well” theme adopted for the festival.

Her response, entitled, “Life Is Beautiful”, resulted in an exclusive exhibition of her effort in the event, which showcased her interpretative skills and artistic talent. The Sun event, which attracted the likes of Jose Carreras, Sharon Stone, George Benson, Curtis Stone and a host of world renowned artists from seven artistic disciplines has catapulted this artist to the world stage.

Not surprisingly, Diana comes from a family of professional artists. Her mother was extremely artistic in her watercolour works and sung opera. One of her sisters is highly accomplished portrait artist in London, another danced with the Royal Ballet Company and her brother is an architect/designer, also based in Asia. When asked if she came from a Bohemian environment, she says, “My parents are not Bohemian but we were immersed in art from our infancy. Art is our mother tongue so to speak. We were born into it.”

Capturing vanishing imagery

After graduating from the Wimbledon School of Art, she worked for a design company in London’s West End before deciding to relocate to Asia as part of her family was at that time in Singapore and Malaysia also.

Diana moved her career into Advertising which saw her living in Hong Kong for 4 years with McCann-Erickson, before they transferred her to Kuala Lumpur Malaysia, to work as their Regional Creative Manager for ASEAN. She travelled extensively throughout her job and was continually inspired by the differences in cultures she experienced in her professional travels.

In 1996, she decided to make Singapore her home after meeting her husband. She joined Ogilvy & Mather Singapore. After a couple of years and a then young family, she moved out of the fast track in advertising and started her own graphic design company. She also went back to her fine art roots and again took up the paintbrush, recording her times in Asia, essentially Singapore.

“I had always noticed that Singapore was such a very young country with little known of it’s Singapore heritage especially amongst it’s younger generation. So, I wanted to paint these vanishing images. I like to interpret these images from a non-Singaporean perspective (I’m a huge romantic by heart). This is why even though people can relate to my paintings in the subject matter, they’re drawn to my interpretation, which is quite unlike Singapore has seen before – in the colour palette I choose and use.”

Reflective pieces

By 2006, Diana was totally consumed by her artistic fervor. Between then and 2010, Diana produced a series of beautiful pieces – and held 6 exhibitions in between this time – all bearing her unmistakable style. Diana’s paintings of local subjects are expressed through vivid and bright colours, and they have the ability to draw the observer into a reflective mood. In 2008, Diana was selected to represent UK at the Beijing Olympics for her Fine Art which was a huge honour.

Interest in Diana’s heritage works grew and soon the National Heritage Board noticed her efforts. Successfully obtaining the Hi2P (Heritage Incentive Program Grant), Diana began applying her works of Singapore’s heritage to products such as greeting cards, tea towels and coasters, in conjunction with her continuing to paint her commissioned pieces for her clientele to reach a broader spectrum of audience.

“Moving into new ventures with my art applied to retailable items is very exciting for me”. In conjunction with developing her own range of merchandise, Diana has extensively worked for the Elephant Parade this past few months in 2011. She retails her own brand ‘Diana Francis Designs’ at TANGs, both in Orchard and at Vivo for the Elephant Parade.

Other such projects see an exciting range of her themed merchandise about to appear at ASM (Art Science Museum) and also MBS (Marina Bay Sands), so keep your eyes out in 2012!

Diana is more optimistic now than before with her works. If the range of merchandise itself wasn’t keeping her busy enough, Diana has just signed a book deal with Thames & Hudson in Singapore, for a range of children’s books she’s registered copyright to, under her and her writer’s names. 2012 certainly seems to be very busy and exciting indeed for her.

Diana’s products can be seen on her own web store selling postcards, towels, mouse pads, coasters, wrapping papers, etc that are based on her local paintings. With a global distributorship via an established distributor in the making, she understandably has every reason to be excited!

Her work will certainly become a key reminder of Singapore’s past for the next generation of Singaporeans and art collectors alike. This is an area for Diana that will never become extinct, just as Diana Francis will forever remain in the Book of Good Works By Singaporeans. Which is why I mentioned TS Eliot had it almost right, when describing a true artist.. Almost!

Nancy Ho’s (of Nancy Ho Academy) main aim is to liberate people from their fears, which limit their potential to become successful in business, relationship, work, family and health.

She looks in every way a modern day self-help “guru” (even though she has never claim herself to be one) – confident, assertive, well-groomed, charismatic, never out of words, and is equipped with a range of self-help techniques and healing solutions – very much the vision whom she teaches others to become.

Manifesting what she preaches

Nancy, who holds qualifications in a number of disciplines, including business, psychology and counseling, and who is also a certified clinical hypnotherapist, offered, “I have a hypnotherapy practice here. The lady who just walked out of this room is my client. We also teach people to become hypnotherapists in my academy. We have courses and we occupy both floors here at the Workloft.”

Nancy was drawn to the field of well-being more than 20-years ago. Although her work has evolved over the years, her specialty has been in the provision of “solutions” which are connected to mind, body and spirit – a holistic or “total” approach to well-being.

She started as a corporate trainer by teaching her clients, who were mostly professionals, soft skills for job efficiency and work productivity. Later, she became interested in hypnotherapy when she saw its greater effectiveness in releasing the vast potential of the human mind when compared to other methods. So, when she started her own hypnotherapy practice, she integrated the method into her counselling.

Nancy says, “In my years of interacting with people, I became aware that people are limited in their progress because of their inner fears. In using hypnotherapy, we can get to the root of deep-seated issues and free people from their fears. I have applied this method in my work for more than 12 years. We can un-condition and re-condition the sub consciousness. And for the person to move forward, we teach him mind skills and focusing techniques. My clients get immediate results after each session.”

Helping others reach for the stars

Nancy trains and practises a number of healing modalities including the widely acclaimed The Quantum-Touch® healing technique, which uses Chi energy for physical healing. In the Awakening Your Spiritual Self programme, participants are taught how to make a connection with their true selves and to liberate themselves from fear and anxiety. Nancy also conducts the Hypnotherapist Certification Course, The 7th Path Self-Hypnosis® Workshop and The Silva Method Programme.

This energetic lady, who works seven days a week, says, “Our method goes beyond the superficial because the mind has the infinite capacity to heal its body. If you can change the way you think, you can remove a lot of burdens from yourself. You can say that there is a spiritual element in my work, because ultimately, our connection to our Divine selves and to the Universe, which is the source of healing, cannot be denied. But we are not aligned with any faith – except the faith in ourselves and in the source of our being.”

Nancy has helped transformed the lives of entrepreneurs, airline pilots, teachers, lawyers, housewives, traders, financial industry executives and many others from all walks of life to reach for the stars.

And she knows what she is talking about. After all, she is one herself!

Elizabeth Wilson, proprietress of Lemon Zest, a culinary lifestyle store on Jalan Merah Saga

Why would a successful banking lawyer from Wall Street own a kitchenware store in Singapore?

Elizabeth Wilson typifies the highly mobile woman of the 21st century with a consuming zest for life… and a dash of passion for cooking.

Originated from Connecticut, raised in New England, schooled in Boston, worked in New York and owns her own financial consulting firm in Hong Kong, she also runs a kitchenware store in Singapore and Shanghai.

Recalling what anchored her in the East, she says, “I was posted to Hong Kong in 2000 by the New York law firm I was working for.  A few years later – in 2004, I incorporated my own firm and I have been operating out of Hong Kong since. I am an information agent, specifically related to bond restructuring – from planning to settlement.”

Lemon Zest has a range of imported cookbooks and magazines

Of her long-time interest in food and cooking, she explains, “I put myself through college and law school by waiting tables and bartending. The F&B experience came in handy as there is a lot of entertaining going on in the corporate world. When I worked in New York, I organized parties and events for my law firm and helped with fund raisers for charities. I just love food and cooking. Whenever I arrive in Holland Village, I head straight for Katong Laksa over at Lorong Liput. Do you know the recipe for Peranakan Laksa?”

This unpretentious and smart lady, who patiently and lovingly cooks for her guests, is no pushover. She is an accomplished competitive yacht (51-footer) sailor and has crewed several regattas a year around Asia since 2003.

Reflecting on her passion for cooking, she says, “I am from Connecticut, which is in New England – a place with beautiful beaches and mountains. It’s a great place for boating, scuba diving and fishing. We have lots of fresh seafood, including lobsters, clams, oysters and mussels. We have all types of wild berries too – strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and blueberries. We are surrounded by an abundance of natural and fresh food. As a teenager, I used to spend a lot of time in the kitchen baking cookies and cakes. Then I starting cooking and entertaining in college – you know, pastas, fish, salads and pretty much what I find healthy and nutritious. My grandmother taught me to always use fresh ingredients, so I never cook or bake anything from a mix. Cooking has always been part of my life.”

Restructuring her categories

It was in Hong Kong in 2006, when Elizabeth was searching for a cookbook (a lucky draw item) for a dog rescue project that she stumbled upon the kitchen ware store, Pantry Magic. “I immediately related to it and I realized that this could be my store. I was considering an investment option and it was timely. So, through a franchise arrangement, I opened the Holland Village store in 2007 under the same name. Earlier this year, I terminated the franchise agreement and rebranded as Lemon Zest. Our focus is more on “culinary lifestyle” rather than “tools”. So, you will see a better range of goods in the months ahead from Lemon Zest. We will continue to sell more of cooking ware than serving ware. But it will certainly be better.”

Elizabeth, who is also board member and director of the International Women Insolvency & Restructuring Confederation (IWIRC), describes her customer type and business philosophy, “We are serving the modern woman who is passionate about cooking and living well. She is a successful woman whether as a home maker or a professional, or both. She knows what she wants. Our goal cannot be other than to make sure our customers get what they want and need. If a customer cannot find what she is looking for, we will discuss with the customer her exact needs and proceed to recommend a suitable substitute. If we do not have the exact product, we try to source it. So, our goods are always changing and evolving – as a result of new demand.”

Making a happy kitchen

Elizabeth says, “Cooking and serving food is putting love on a plate. I don’t know of any more gratifying way to show people I care about them. It’s an effort of love. It makes me feel complete.”

In the words of American author, Barbara Costikyan:

“In the childhood memories of every good cook, there’s a large kitchen, a warm stove, a simmering pot and a mom.”

And helping its customers create this happy vision is what Lemon Zest is about.

So, why should it be hard to imagine a successful banking lawyer from Wall Street being anything else other than a real human being – especially if she is a passionate cook and sells you kitchenware in Holland Village?
